Seasonal Greetings from Guy Kistka - Back to School in September

New teachers, new friends, new shoes, new notebooks, and sometimes, a new school. Just a few things that mean back to school. Our playful mascot reminds us to slow down in school zones as excited kids head back to school.

What does back to school mean to you and your family? For the team of pysanky experts at Baba’s Beeswax back to school means the end of summer vacation and getting pysanky supplies and teaching aids ready for ordering. From beeswax and dyes to books and workshops we have everything you and your teacher need to make beautiful pysanky the traditional way.

We have been partners in education with teachers and schools since 1991!

Tuesday Tips for Pysanky — using beeswax

Continuing in our Tuesday Tips for pysanky, this post speaks to your unique learning style. What is it? is it listening (we have a podcast), is it watching (we have a YouTube channel), is it doing (we have a tutorial), is it online (we have digital resources), or is it reading (we have unique publications). Learning pysanky is easy, fun and affordable.

Today’s tip about beeswax that will not adhere to your egg. This could be because the surface of the egg has moisture on it. Make sure your egg is totally dry before applying beeswax, as beeswax will not adhere to a wet surface.

Q. Why can't I use an eraser?

A. Erasers could compromise the shell and prevent it from being dyed. Instead, use pencil sparingly.

Today’s tip about eggs is to allow them to come to room temperature naturally. If eggs need to be washed, rinse them gently in a solution of 1 tablespoon white vinegar added to 1 cup of water. Do not use detergent or soap to clean eggs.

A Pysanka Poem Worth Sharing — The Best Pysanka

This poem is entitled “The Best Pysanka”, by Ivanna Savytska. Sorry I don’t know the publishing details. I recently found a photocopy of the poem in an old file folder. I thought it was too beautiful not to share. If anyone has heard of this author or read her works, please let me know and I’ll update this post.

My grandmother writes pysanky,
So does my mother, and so do I.
But whose will be the very best?
I think the answer will be: mine.

My grandmother agrees with me,
My mother says that mine’s the best.
And I ask “Daddy, is that true?”
And he replies “Of course it is!”

Even the cat is murmuring,
High upon the windowsill.
No doubt he wants to make it known
the glory really should be his.

Because upon my colored egg
He placed his moistened little paw.
Unseeingly he thus did ruin
My straight and freshly written lines.

My grandmother writes pysanky,
So does my mother, and so do I.
But whose will be the prettiest one?
I think the answer will be: mine.

Q. At what temperature does beeswax melt?

A. Beeswax has a relatively low melting point range of 62 to 64 °C (144 to 147 °F) which makes it dry very quickly on your egg. Unlike paraffin wax, pure beeswax is ideal for writing pysanky.

Our Tuesday Tip for Removing Beeswax

Continuing in our Tuesday Tips for pysanky, this post speaks to your unique learning style. What is it? is it listening (we have a podcast), is it watching (we have a YouTube channel), is it doing (we have a tutorial), is it online (we have digital resources), or is it reading (we have unique publications). Learning pysanky is easy, fun and affordable.

Today’s tip is about removing beeswax residue. We see user groups all over the internet who could definitely benefit from this tip, because it applies to not only beeswax, but also to unsightly pencil marks. Wipe your egg with a cotton ball or tissue, dabbed in paint thinner or lighter fluid. You can also do this with discretion using a q-tip, at any step of the dyeing process.

Our team has you covered. You can trust the experts at Baba’s Beeswax. Our Mission is to provide you with everything you need to make beautiful pysanky the traditional way from pysanky supplies and kits to workshops and books. Seasonal Greetings from Guy Kistka — BC Day

We’re heading into the middle of the summer season and looking forward to the August long weekend.

It can’t be all work and no fun! Taking a break from writing pysanky in the summer months, our playful mascot Guy Kistka dons his shades and goes to a secluded beach to chill where the only sounds are gentle waves and cawing seagulls.

The civic holiday in August of each year is called many things in many regions. It’s Regatta Day in Newfoundland, Terry Fox day in MB, Saskatchewan Day in SK, British Columbia Day in BC, Natal Day in Nova Scotia and PEI, Simcoe Day in Toronto, New Brunswick Day in NB, Colonel By Day in Ottawa, Heritage Day in AB, Joseph Brant Day in Burlington, ON, and Benjamin Vaughan Day in the City of Vaughan, ON. What’s it called in your region?

If you like what you see, comment below. If you don't please let us know how we can make improvements. We value all feedback.
