Ask us anything about pysanky—how to hold a kistka
Ask us anything about pysanky—tools, technique, tradition and more . . . . To share our knowledge, our team of experts draws on not only our heritage, but also over 30 years teaching pysanky to all ages and levels of experience since 1991. Today's dialogue is on technique.
Question – How should I hold a kistka?
Answer – It is generally held like a pencil. You should hold it whatever way your motor skills make it easier for you to use. The important thing is to have the tip of the kistka perpendicular to the egg so that melted beeswax can flow out. Think of how gravity works to "pull something down".
We believe that pysanky is a fun activity. We embrace “Panya Pysanka”, our cool, hip, and whimsical mascot character who follows us on social media to help promote pysanky.

Tuesday Tips for pysanky — beeswax
Our Tuesday Tips
for Pysanky. What’s your learning style? is it listening (we have a
podcast), is it watching (we have a YouTube channel), is it doing
(we have a tutorial), is it online (we have digital resources), or is it
reading (we have unique publications). We’ve been doing all this and more since 1991 and this
year we’re celebrating our 30th anniversary! Learning pysanky

Troubleshooting for eggs, beeswax, kistka, dyes, candles, pencil guidelines,
removing beeswax, emptying your eggs, varnishing your pysanky, using a drying
board, displaying your pysanky and more . . . .
Today’s Tip is to use beeswax that has been colored. It still smells heavenly! A dark color makes your lines easy to see on your egg. Listen to Episode 1 of our Pysanka Power Podcast “The Essentials of Pysanky Ukrainian Easter Eggs” on your favourite app or here. Here's a photo of our "technical expert", Tom, pouring coloured beeswax into molds.

Ask us anything about pysanky—orange wash

Question – What is orange wash?
Answer – It's a second or supplemental jar of orange dye. It has the unique ability to "wash out" accent colours of light green, light blue or turquoise and prepare the shell for the bright, vibrant colours that come next.
Baba's Beeswax offers a handy colour chart explaining the traditional sequence for guaranteed results, including "orange wash", using the 18 colours palette. See their Laminated Pysanky Colour Sequence Chart on their website here.

Ask us anything about pysanky—empty eggs

Question – Why do I have to seal the hole in an empty egg?
Answer – It's so that dye will not get inside the shell. If it does, it will not only drip out onto your work surface, but also compromise the beeswax.
Download a free handout by Joan Brander from our website here to compare the properties of raw eggs versus empty eggshells.

Tuesday Tips for pysanky — using empty eggshells and sealing the hole

removing beeswax, emptying your eggs, varnishing your pysanky, using a drying

Today’s Tip is to use melted beeswax from the kistka to seal the hole and weigh down your empty eggshell with a small jar filled with just enough water to hold the egg under the dye. Here’s two resources from Baba’s Beeswax on this. You can download our FREE handout Raw Eggs vs. Empty Eggshells here. Also a subject of one of our Let’s Chat about Pysanky ZOOM meetings, you can watch a short YouTube video published in our Pysanky How To’s and DIY Playlist here.

Tuesday Tips for pysanky — removing beeswax
What’s your learning style? is it listening (we have a podcast), is it watching (we have a YouTube channel), is it doing (we have a tutorial), is it online (we have digital resources), or is it reading (we have unique publications). Today’s Tip is on removing beeswax using the candle method. If you do use a candle, do not place the pysanka directly in the flame. This could cause soot from the wick of the candle to blacken your design, or worse, burn it. The burned areas cannot be repaired.
Our future Tuesday Tips will cover other methods of removing beeswax, as well as removing unwanted black soot from your pysanka.
