A Pysanka Poem Worth Sharing — To the Egg

Discover the magic of pysanky one poem at a time in our monthly sharing of these words arranged purposefully with meaning, sound, and rhythm.

Just as Baba’s Beeswax inspires and encourages beginners, experts, and anyone interested in Ukrainian egg decorating, these featured authors connect us to tradition and inspire us to new possibilities.

We hope you enjoy reading To the Egg, by Aline Becker:

To the egg —

which in olden times
was colored with myth and superstition,
which now is colored
with stains and velvets and jewels!
A source of pleasure
to all who see them
from scratch-carved to pysanky
to Faberge’s precious creations
to today’s never-ending variety!
Here’s to the egg!
