Seasonal Greetings from Guy Kistka – January 6 Ukrainian Christmas Eve

The beautiful "Carol of the Bells" a popular Christmas carol, with music by Ukrainian composer Mykola Leontovych, opens this video clip of our whimsical mascot Guy Kistka celebrating Ukrainian Christmas Eve by honouring and remembering the rich traditions celebrated by our ancestors.

Guy Kistka will join other children for Christmas carols (koliadky) in the likes of an ancient folk opera: one carrying a lighted six-pointed star; another dressed as a goat; while others prepared to collect gifts that people will give them.

Later today children will look for the first star in the sky, another ancient ritual, to indicate that it’s time for the Holy Supper (Svyata Vechera) of 12 lenten dishes.

Ask Us Anything About Pysanky – tradition

Tools, technique, tradition and more . . . . ask us anything about pysanky. To share our knowledge, our team of experts at www.babasbeeswax.com draws on not only our heritage, but also over 30 years teaching pysanky to all ages and levels of experience since 1991. Today's dialogue is on tradition.

Question  – What is the colour on a traditional Ukrainian pysanka that symbolizes the sky with its life-giving air?

Answer – Turquoise. To see the vibrant palette of 18 pysanky dyes from Baba’s Beeswax, open this Colour Chart on their website https://www.babasbeeswax.com/18%20Pysanky%20Dyes.htm. They also have a handy Laminated Pysanky Colour Sequence Chart explaining the traditional sequence for guaranteed results, including "orange wash" https://www.babasbeeswax.com/Catalogue.htm.

We believe that pysanky is fun and we embrace “Panya Pysanka”, our cool, hip, and whimsical mascot character. See her here in our “Ask Us Anything About Pysanky ” post and elsewhere on social media to see how we promote pysanky.

Tuesday Tips for pysanky — using a drying board

Learning pysanky is easy, fun and affordable. Continuing in our bi-weekly series we have Tips and Troubleshooting for eggs, beeswax, kistka, dyes, candles, pencil guidelines, removing beeswax, emptying your eggs, varnishing your pysanky, using a drying board, displaying your pysanky and more . . . .

What’s your learning style? is it listening (we have a podcast “Pysanka Power Podcast”), is it watching (we have a YouTube Channel “Baba’s Beeswax” or “iluvpysanky” with multiple playlists), is it doing (we have a tutorial “Teacher Guide”), is it online (we have digital resources including “ZOOM” meetings), or is it reading (we have unique publications from Canada and elsewhere). We’ve been doing all this and more since 1991 and just celebrated our 30th anniversary!

Today’s tip is to use a drying board for a safe place for your pysanky.

The oven method is a very effective and fast way to remove beeswax from your pysanky. Preheat your oven for 10 minutes at 200 degrees with the door open. Place your drying board in the centre of the oven and set up to 12 pysanky on the tripods. When the beeswax begins to melt, remove the pysanky, one at a time, and wipe off the beeswax with a soft cloth or paper towel. Make sure that the beeswax is thoroughly wiped off.  Turn the oven off.

You can make your own drying board by inserting thumb tacks into a piece of sturdy cardboard. Be careful when moving the drying board with pysanky on it, they might fall off!

Our team has you covered. You can trust the experts at Baba’s Beeswax.com. Our Mission is to provide you with everything you need to make beautiful pysanky the traditional way from pysanky supplies and kits to workshops and books. Our Vision is to inspire and encourage beginners, experts, and anyone interested in Ukrainian egg decorating to discover the magic of one of the great traditions of all time—PYSANKY!

A pysanka poem worth sharing

Discover the magic of pysanky one poem at a time in our monthly sharing of these words arranged purposefully with meaning, sound, and rhythm.

Just as Baba’s Beeswax https://www.babasbeeswax.com inspires and encourages beginners, experts, and anyone interested in Ukrainian egg decorating, these featured authors connect us to tradition and inspire us to new possibilities.

Although stanzas lose their charm in translation, as it is repetitions, rhymes, and other language means that make a piece of poetry so appealing in the original, we nevertheless hope you enjoy reading To an Egg Painter, by Vira Vorsklo, originally in Ukrainian:

We painted an egg,
an undulating egg,
with various patterns,
Finding symbols (for that).
We painted an egg
As if it were lace or a piece of embroidery,
Lustrous and colourful.
Eggs with [painted] laces
Became amulets.
On them sorcery is encoded –
It kills the evil
With lances.

The biblical Magi, also referred to as the Three Wise Men or Three Kings, were distinguished foreigners who travelled to Bethlehem to visit Jesus after his birth, bearing gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. They are regular figures in accounts of the nativity celebrations of Christmas and are an important part of Christian traditions.

Our whimsical mascot Guy Kistka and the team of pysanky experts at Baba’s Beeswax wish that the magic of Christmas Eve brings its richest blessing in the hearts of friends, fans and followers.

Although the “candle method” of removing beeswax is popular, it can easily leave unsightly carbon on your pysanky. Instead, use the “oven method” with a drying board to remove beeswax.

A pysanka poem worth sharing

A pysanka poem worth sharing. This one shared by my late mother, who was an avid follower of publications by Redeemer's Voice Press. I recall my mother’s bedside reading of anything published by Redeemer’s Voice Press, Yorkton, SK. She shared this poem by George Perejda, CSSR published in an Easter edition of a periodical. Note the double entendre of dyeing and dying. I’ve had to type very carefully and avoid spell-check for this one.

Pysanka—A Writing
What a lesson is the pysanka,
fragile holy scripture,
faithful writing of the people of God:
the egg and the ego
the shell and the self
the egg-sample and the egg-sistence
—the coloring and the colorfulness
that dying in Christ give to my meaningfulness.
The mystery of the egg—the mystery of the ego.
Resurrection: rising from the dyeing,
rising from the baptism, in Christ’s colors;
the living waters that transform
and give my life such colorfulness,
so that with Paul I can break out
of the shell of self (or ego) and say:
I live now, not I or ego, but Christ
lives in me.
And I live in Christ,
dyed in His vivid colors,
which gives so much more meaning to my ego, to the egg of my self.
So—egg me on, O Bard
Dye and Try me!
Color me with krasa:
with red and green and blue and yellow
and orange and purple.
Make evident your designs upon me!
Make me an egg-sample of your Good News,
of your living and dying,
so that I can bear witness
and be your apostle, proclaiming
by my egg-sistence:
“Come, follow me!
Be imitators of me, be images of me,
as I am of Christ.
Learn of me, of my egg-sample,
as I have learned of Christ
the fulfillment of living and dying
colorfully in Christ!”
Amen.

Ask us anything about pysanky — technique

Ask us anything about pysanky—tools, technique, tradition and more . . . . To share our knowledge, our team of experts draws on not only our heritage, but also over 30 years teaching pysanky to all ages and levels of experience since 1991. Today's dialogue is on on technique.

Question —What happens if I touch the wick of the candle with my kistka?

Answer – The wick is where soot from the candle is deposited. Soot from the wick will get into the tip of your kistka  and possibly clog it. The kistka may then need to be cleaned out. See more in this short video in the Pysanky How To's and DIY playlist on YouTube here https://youtu.be/uu31FTeDo9I

We believe that pysanky is a fun activity. We embrace “Panya Pysanka”, our cool, hip, and whimsical mascot character who follows us on social media to help promote pysanky.
