Tools, technique, tradition and more . . . . ask us anything about pysanky. To share our knowledge, our team of experts at www.babasbeeswax.com draws on not only our heritage, but also over 30 years teaching pysanky to all ages and levels of experience since 1991. Today's dialogue is on safety.
Question – What are safety
precautions for using candles?
Answer – Most of all, use your common sense when working around life
fire. To learn more about safety when writing pysanky, download this free
handout from Baba’s Beeswax Fire
Safety Fact Sheet https://www.babasbeeswax.com/X-pdfFiles/Fire%20Safety%20Fact%20Sheet%20copyright%202019.pdf.
We believe that pysanky is fun and we embrace “Panya Pysanka”, our cool, hip, and whimsical mascot character. See her here in our “ask us anything about pysanky” post and elsewhere on social media to see how we promote pysanky.
Discover the magic of pysanky with a book. If you’d like to add to your collection of books, have a look at Eggs Beautiful – How to Make Ukrainian Easter Eggs featured on our YouTube Channel (Baba’s Beeswax / iluvpysanky) | Book Preview Playlist and see if it'll fit into your library. Here’s the YouTube link https://youtu.be/YClQ56AWyac. Then head over to https:www.babasbeeswax.com to order your own copy.
The first part of the book focuses on legends,
customs and symbols. Then the authors Johanna Luciow, Ann Kmit, and Joanna Luciow, and Loretta Luciow take
you step-by-step through the process of making your pysanky from choosing your
eggs, creating your design, to finally displaying and storing them. Black
and white diagrams complemented with 12
color pages of beautifully decorated eggs for you to be inspired by. Trypillian
designs are included. This book is soft cover comprising 96 pages.
With the month of love just around the corner, discover the joy and love of the pysanka, Ukrainian Easter egg, in our creative Pysanka Joy Collection of face masks, apparel (more than just T-shirt), gifts and novelty items for your home or office (greeting cards, mugs, etc.). Feel the joy and love of the pysanka, Ukrainian Easter egg, in this Collection. These inspiring words are featured on a variety of gifts and novelty items, too.

Discover the
magic of pysanky one poem at a time in our monthly sharing of these words
arranged purposefully with meaning, sound, and rhythm.
Just as Baba’s Beeswax inspires
and encourages beginners, experts, and anyone interested in Ukrainian egg
decorating, these featured authors connect us to tradition and inspire us to
new possibilities.
Although stanzas lose their charm in
translation, as it is repetitions, rhymes, and other language means that make a
piece of poetry so appealing in the original, we nevertheless hope you enjoy
reading To an Egg Painter, by Vira Vorsklo, originally in Ukrainian:
We painted an egg,
an undulating egg,
with various patterns,
Finding symbols (for that).
We painted an egg
As if it were lace or a piece of embroidery,
Lustrous and colourful.
Eggs with [painted] laces
Became amulets.
On them sorcery is encoded –
It kills the evil
With lances.

The beautiful "Carol of the Bells" a popular Christmas carol, with music by Ukrainian composer Mykola Leontovych, opens this video clip of our whimsical mascot Guy Kistka celebrating Ukrainian Christmas Eve by honouring and remembering the rich traditions celebrated by our ancestors.
Guy Kistka will join other children for Christmas carols (koliadky) in the likes of an ancient folk opera: one carrying a lighted six-pointed star; another dressed as a goat; while others prepared to collect gifts that people will give them.
Later today children will look for the first star in the sky, another ancient ritual, to indicate that it’s time for the Holy Supper (Svyata Vechera) of 12 lenten dishes.

Learning pysanky is easy, fun and affordable. Continuing in our bi-weekly series we have Tips and Troubleshooting for eggs, beeswax, kistka, dyes, candles, pencil guidelines, removing beeswax, emptying your eggs, varnishing your pysanky, using a drying board, displaying your pysanky and more . . . .
What’s your learning style? is it listening (we have a podcast
“Pysanka Power Podcast”), is it watching (we have a YouTube Channel “Baba’s
Beeswax” or “iluvpysanky” with multiple playlists), is it doing (we have a
tutorial “Teacher Guide”), is it online (we have digital resources including
“ZOOM” meetings), or is it reading (we have unique publications from Canada and
elsewhere). We’ve been doing all this and more since 1991 and just celebrated
our 30th anniversary!
Today’s tip is to use a drying board for a safe place
for your pysanky.
The oven method is a very effective and fast way to
remove beeswax from your pysanky. Preheat your oven for 10 minutes at 200
degrees with the door open. Place your drying board in the centre of the oven
and set up to 12 pysanky on the tripods. When the beeswax begins to melt,
remove the pysanky, one at a time, and wipe off the beeswax with a soft cloth
or paper towel. Make sure that the beeswax is thoroughly wiped off. Turn the oven off.
You can make your own drying board by inserting thumb
tacks into a piece of sturdy cardboard. Be careful when moving the drying board
with pysanky on it, they might fall off!
Our team has you covered. You can trust the experts at Baba’s Beeswax.com. Our Mission is
to provide you with everything you need to make beautiful pysanky the
traditional way from pysanky supplies and kits to workshops and books. Our
Vision is to inspire and encourage beginners, experts, and anyone
interested in Ukrainian egg decorating to discover the magic of one of the
great traditions of all time—PYSANKY!
For an exciting pyrotechnic show and family-friendly
event, our whimsical mascot Guy Kistka and the team of pysanky experts at
Baba’s Beeswax celebrate New Year’s Eve just off Canada Place in Vancouver’s
Burrard Inlet every year on December 31st. The fireworks light up the sky and
the view of the city is spectacular! May the dawn of the New Year bring health
and happiness to you and yours.
