Answer – The beeswax resists the colour of the dye that the egg is put into; hence the term "wax-resist".

Question  – Why shouldn’t I practice on a piece of paper with my kistka?

Answer – Paper has fibres, and fibres can collect in the tip of your kistka, causing a blockage.

Tuesday Tips for pysanky — removing beeswax

Learning pysanky is easy, fun and affordable. Continuing in our bi-weekly series we have Tips and Troubleshooting for eggs, beeswax, kistka, dyes, candles, pencil guidelines, removing beeswax, emptying your eggs, varnishing your pysanky, using a drying board, displaying your pysanky and more . . . .

What’s your learning style? is it listening (we have a podcast “Pysanka Power Podcast”), is it watching (we have a YouTube Channel “Baba’s Beeswax” or “iluvpysanky” with multiple playlists), is it doing (we have a tutorial “Teacher Guide”), is it online (we have digital resources including “ZOOM” meetings), or is it reading (we have unique publications from Canada and elsewhere). We’ve been doing all this and more since 1991 and just celebrated our 30th anniversary!

Today’s tip is about removing beeswax residue. We see user groups all over the internet who could definitely benefit from this tip, because it applies to not only beeswax, but also to unsightly pencil marks. Wipe your egg with a cotton ball or tissue, dabbed in paint thinner or lighter fluid (available from your hardware or convenience store). You can also do this with discretion using a q-tip, at any step of the dyeing process.

The great gift of pysanky is hope

Here's an update on Bev Bakka's Stand With Ukraine Pysanky Workshop Fundrasier:

Drum roll...... $1145 went to the following humanitarian charities:

• Red Cross
• Doctors Without Borders
• Amnesty International
• Ukrainian Foundation

We sold Stand With Ukraine Pysanky Kits, hosted one workshop, two smaller informal get-togethers, and enjoyed being sponsored by Babas Beeswax.
